Most deck jobs fail because of what happens before the first drop of stain ever touches the wood. Skipping the prep - or rushing through it - is exactly why so many decks peel, flake, and look rough again within a year or two. We see it all the time.

On this one, we started by stripping the old finish down completely. Then a proper pressure wash to clear out all the dirt, debris, and anything else the wood had collected. After that, we scraped what needed scraping. None of that is glamorous work, but it's what determines how long the finished product actually holds up.

For the stain, we went with Sharkskin from Rodda Paint - two full coats. Rodda makes a quality product, and Sharkskin is a solid color that gives you that clean, even coverage you want on a deck this size. Two coats means the wood is actually protected, not just painted over.

The difference between a deck that lasts and one that doesn't comes down to this kind of process. Solid prep, quality materials, and doing it in the right order. We don't skip steps because the shortcuts always show up later - usually at the worst time.

If your deck is weathered, faded, or the finish is starting to fail, this kind of work is exactly what it needs. A proper strip, wash, and two-coat stain job can add years of life and keep the wood looking sharp season after season.
